Mr. afiba bertrand
2011 Francisco R. Walker Teacher of the Year Nominee
It was at a very young age that Afiba Bertrand realized the value of education. Instilled by his parents and harnessed by mentors along the way, Mr. Bertrand knew that education was the key to success. Coming from humble beginnings, Mr. Bertrand had to overcome many obstacles to obtain a formal degree from The University of Florida. However, while in college, Mr. Bertrand saw a need to not only educate himself but also future generations, so he sought out to do something about it. Combining his background in Exercise and Sport Science and love for children, he decided to embark on a career in physical education. Mr. Bertrand has been teaching for six years at Ludlam Elementary school and during those six years he has been active in extracurricular activities and in the community where he visits the Claridge House and Villa Maria nursing homes every second and fourth Saturday. Mr. Bertrand also tutors at-risk youths every Monday and Tuesday evening. He feels that all people have the need to be taught to their full potential and that all minds are powerful and precious so he has vowed to educate and guide all minds in his classroom regardless of their background.
